Nazareth Ministry Partners

Nazareth Living Center's history begins with the Order of the Sisters of St. Joseph who came to St. Louis from France in 1836 at the invitation of St. Louis Bishop Joseph Rosati. Originally asked to establish a school for the deaf, the sisters soon became engaged in a wide variety of needed services: health care, education at all levels, pastoral care, child care, advocacy for the poor, counseling, social services, and parish ministry. That order of nuns is known today as the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.

In 1872, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet began their mission at Nazareth as a home for retired and infirm sisters. In 1992, the Sisters expanded their mission beyond caring for retired sisters to the broader community of laypeople to meet the growing need for quality elder care services.

To this day, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet remain active in the Nazareth Community. The sisters reside at every level of the campus alongside laypeople and they continue to serve others as is their tradition.

Ministry Partnership with Benedictine Health System

Today, Nazareth Living Center is a nonprofit community for seniors that includes a new independent living building and an existing continuum of residential care services including assisted living, memory care, long-term care, skilled nursing, and skilled rehabilitation. On July 1, 2009, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet of St. Louis and the Benedictine Health System of Duluth, Minn., entered into a ministry partnership agreement to operate Nazareth Living Center and provide holistic care for people of all faiths, races and socio-economic backgrounds.

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet have faithfully served a world in need for more than 350 years. Today more than 1500 sisters and 600 lay associates carry on this mission with provinces, vice-provinces and missions located in the United States, Peru, Japan and Chile.
