Music Therapy at Nazareth Living Center
Laura C. Myers, MA, MT-BC (Music Therapist-Board Certified) has been providing music therapy to the Nazareth Living Center residents since 2009. She is able to provide a variety of music therapy services to the residents including individual sessions, large and small music therapy groups and educational programs.
Music therapy programs are implemented within the Nazareth wellness program as an avenue to promote wellness, manage stress, alleviate pain, enhance memory, improve communication as well as provide opportunities for interaction. This type of therapy not only supports the effectiveness of interventions in physical rehabilitation, but can also provide emotional support for residents and an outlet for them to express their feelings.
The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) has promoted much research exploring the benefits of music therapy for persons with Alzheimer's Disease. Their research shows that music therapy can reduce depression among older adults. In addition, music experiences can be structured to enhance social and emotional skills, and to assist in recall and language skills. The AMTA research also shows that individuals in the late stages of dementia respond to and interact with music. (AMTA, Music Therapy and Alzheimer’s Disease Fact Sheet)
